Changes to distance selling regulations

The EU Consumer Rights Directive (CRD) which was agreed last October brings a number of welcome changes to harmonise consumer rights across Europe with respect to online purchases. For example, the statutory “cooling off” period will rise from 7 days to 14, and refunds must be provided within 14 days instead of 30. Charges for payment methods such as credit cards will also be banned. Whilst the CRD is mandatory for the UK government, there is a degree of flexibility in implementation – if you’re an online retailer and want to have your say, the Government’s online consultation is open until 1st Nov 2012.
